B.Tech / B.E.

What does it take to get into a B.Tech in India, how long is it, and what does it lead to?

Quick answer

B.Tech (also called B.E.) is the four-year undergraduate engineering degree. AICTE's model curriculum sets it at eight semesters and about 160 credits. You enter after Class 12, and the NIT system asks for Physics and Maths among your Class 12 subjects. For NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes the entrance is JEE Main Paper 1; for the IITs it is JEE Advanced, which you can sit only after doing well in JEE Main.

JEE (Main) 2027 dates, Paper 1 pattern, age and passing-year rules are from NTA's 2027 bulletin (24 October 2026). The 2027 bulletin does not repeat the NIT+ subject and 75% rules, so those are read from the 2026 bulletin. The length and credit figures come from AICTE's January 2018 model curriculum.

What it is

B.Tech, also called B.E., is the four-year undergraduate degree in engineering. AICTE publishes a model curriculum and asks universities to follow it: eight semesters and about 160 credits, from common science courses in the first year to branch subjects, projects and an internship.[1]

Who it suits, and who struggles

It tends to suit you if

  • You like knowing how things work and then making them work better.
  • You're happy with a first year of maths, science and basic engineering courses before the branch subjects start.
  • Project work appeals to you. The final semesters are built around a project, a seminar and an internship.

You may struggle if

  • You picked engineering only because classmates did. Four years is a long time to study a branch you don't care about.
  • You'd rather work with people than with equipment, numbers or code.

This is a guide to the work the route asks of you, not a test of ability.[1]

The road

  1. Class 12 with Physics and MathsStage

The NIT system also needs a language, one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject, and one more subject.

  2. JEE Main Paper 1Entrance

For NITs, IIITs and other central institutes. The IITs need JEE Advanced as well.

  3. JoSAA/CSAB counsellingStage

Seats at central institutes are filled on your rank. States may run their own counselling.

  4. B.Tech: 8 semestersCourse

Common first year, then branch subjects, electives, a project and an internship.

  5. Work, M.Tech or a government postWork

Engineering jobs, an M.Tech or M.E., or government engineering recruitment.

How the degree is built

AICTE publishes a model curriculum for undergraduate engineering that universities are asked to adopt. It runs over four years in eight semesters. It starts with a mandatory three-week student induction programme, puts common science and engineering courses in the first year, and moves to branch subjects, electives and project work later. The final-year semesters include project work, a seminar and an internship in industry.

Colleges can adjust the courses to fit local needs, but AICTE asks them to keep the total at about 160 credits.[1]

Getting in

Central institutes (NITs, IIEST, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes) fill B.Tech seats on your JEE Main Paper 1 rank through JoSAA and CSAB counselling. You also have to meet their Class 12 rule: 75% aggregate in five subjects (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.

State engineering colleges may use JEE Main or their own rank list. NTA's bulletin leaves that choice to each state, so check your state's admission notice.

A three-year diploma recognised by AICTE or a State board of technical education is one of the qualifying exams NTA accepts for JEE Main.[2]

JEE Main 2027: dates, paper and who can sit it

NTA opened JEE (Main) 2027 Session 1 on 24 October 2026. The form closes at 11:50 pm on 22 November 2026. Late forms, with an extra Rs 500, run from 23 to 26 November, and corrections from 27 to 29 November. The January session is on 20 to 24 and 28 January 2027. Session 2 forms open on 5 January and close on 3 February 2027, and that exam runs from 2 to 7 April 2027.

Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech is a three-hour computer-based test with 25 questions each in Maths, Physics and Chemistry: 75 questions for 300 marks. A correct answer earns 4 marks and a wrong one costs 1, in both the multiple-choice section and the numerical-answer section.

There is no age limit. You can sit JEE Main 2027 if you passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or are taking it in 2027. A pass in 2024 or earlier rules you out. Your passing year is the year you first passed, so a later improvement attempt does not reset it.

If you sit both sessions, NTA uses the better of your two total scores for the merit list. The 2027 bulletin does not repeat the NIT+ Class 12 marks rule, so the 75% figure on this page comes from the 2026 bulletin. Check JoSAA's 2027 rules before counselling.[6]

A day in the work

The day depends on your branch. The National Classification of Occupations says civil engineers conduct research, advise on design and direct construction, and manage the operation and maintenance of civil engineering structures. Mechanical engineers conduct research, advise on design and direct the production of machines, ships, industrial plant and equipment, and advise on how they run and are maintained.[5]

Where a B.Tech leads

The degree trains you as an engineer in the branch you study, and you can go on to an M.Tech or M.E. Many M.Tech admissions use GATE scores, and CorrectForm's GATE page covers that exam's form. Government engineering posts such as SSC JE and RRB JE recruit through their own exams, and CorrectForm checks the eligibility for those against each official notification.

Career pages for specific engineering roles are coming in a later phase. We will not print salary figures unless an official or survey source backs them.

Growth

After the degree you can work as an engineer in your branch or study for an M.Tech or M.E. Government engineering posts recruit through their own exams. SSC's Junior Engineer exam is one, and its notice states the pay level.[4]

Tips and tricks

  • Fill the Session 1 form even if April is your main target. Only your better total score counts, so a January attempt costs you nothing on the merit list.[6]
  • Check your Class 12 subjects against the NIT+ rule now: Physics, Maths, a language, one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject, and one more.[2]
  • Your Class 12 marks matter as much as the rank. Without 75% (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a top-20-percentile place in your board, a good JEE rank will not get you an NIT seat.[2]
  • If you already hold or are studying for a three-year diploma, look at lateral entry into the second year. It needs 45% in the diploma (40% for reserved categories).[3]

Questions people ask

Is B.E. the same as B.Tech?

They are two names for the same four-year undergraduate engineering degree. NTA's bulletin writes them together as B.E./B.Tech, and JEE Main Paper 1 is the entrance for both.[2]

Do I need Chemistry in Class 12 for a B.Tech at an NIT?

Not necessarily. For programmes filled on the Paper 1 rank, the NIT+ rule asks for Physics and Maths plus one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or a technical vocational subject, a language, and one more subject.[2]

What if I scored below 75% in Class 12?

You can still qualify for NIT+ admission if you are in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates of your board, in your category. The cut-off is 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. State colleges set their own rules.[2]

When is JEE Main 2027?

Session 1 is on 20 to 24 and 28 January 2027, and Session 2 on 2 to 7 April 2027. The Session 1 form closes at 11:50 pm on 22 November 2026.[6]

Is there an age limit for JEE Main 2027?

No. You need to have passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or be taking it in 2027. Colleges may still have their own age rules.[6]

How many questions and marks are in JEE Main Paper 1?

75 questions for 300 marks over three hours, with 25 questions each in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each wrong answer loses 1.[6]

Who can sit JEE Advanced 2027?

The top 2,50,000 successful candidates, across all categories, in the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE Main 2027. The JEE Advanced website, jeeadv.ac.in, has the full rules.[6]
