State and private universities run their own BCA admissions under their own rules. AICTE only sets the Class 12 pass as the base.[1]

BCA, the Bachelor of Computer Applications, is an undergraduate degree on UGC's list of recognised degree names. Since the 2024-25 academic year AICTE also regulates BCA courses, including those run by general degree colleges. AICTE's handbook lists the BCA as a 3 or 4 year course. The entry rule is a Class 12 pass, with any further conditions set by the affiliating university. Central universities admit through CUET (UG) scores, and the next steps include an MCA, jobs in software, and government posts that ask for any degree.

Eligibility and duration are from AICTE's Approval Process Handbook 2024-2027. CUET details are from the 2026 bulletin; NTA had not published a 2027 bulletin when we checked on 1 November 2026.
BCA stands for Bachelor of Computer Applications. It is serial 35 on UGC's list of degrees specified under section 22 of the UGC Act, so a recognised university can award it under that name. The degree teaches programming and the use of computers in business and other work, and it sits next to the BBA and BMS in AICTE's newer rules for degree colleges.[3]
This is a guide to the work the route asks of you, not a test of ability.[1]
AICTE asks for a Class 12 pass. Your university may add a Maths or marks rule.
Central universities use CUET (UG) scores. Other universities run their own process.
AICTE lists both lengths. A 4-year BCA opens lateral entry into the MCA's second year.
Software jobs, the two-year MCA, or posts that take any graduate, such as those through SSC CGL.
For years, most BCA courses ran in ordinary degree colleges under their university, with no AICTE approval. That changed in 2024. AICTE's guidelines say it will regulate undergraduate courses in management (BBA and BMS) and computer applications (BCA) from the 2024-25 academic year, and the 2024-2027 Approval Process Handbook brings these courses in general degree colleges under AICTE.
Before you pay a fee, check that the college's BCA appears on AICTE's approved list for your year and that a recognised university awards the degree.[2]
AICTE's eligibility row for BCA asks only for a pass in Class 12 "with eligibility as per the Affiliating University Admission Policy". It also accepts a pass in a diploma in Commercial Practice. It sets no minimum percentage and does not name Mathematics. Your university can still add either, so the programme page decides.
Central universities, and other universities that take part, admit on CUET (UG) scores. You choose up to five tests from 37, and Mathematics/Applied Mathematics is test code 319. If the university you want lists Maths as a required CUET test for BCA, take it.[1]
Fees: Fees vary by university and college. Check the official fee notice of the institution before you apply.
Graduates usually start in software or web roles. The National Classification of Occupations describes software developers as people who research, analyse and evaluate the requirements for software, then design, develop, test and maintain it. Web developers design and maintain web-based applications with static and dynamic content.[5]
The usual next degree is the MCA. AICTE's handbook admits any graduate with 50% marks (45% for reserved categories) to the two-year MCA, preferably with Maths at Class 12 or degree level. Students without a Maths background take a bridge course set by the university. If you finish a 4-year BCA, the same handbook lets you join the MCA in its second year through lateral entry, subject to seats.
Government recruitment through SSC's Combined Graduate Level exam is open to any graduate for most posts, and the Statistical Investigator Grade-II post names Computer Application among the accepted degree subjects. CorrectForm checks the CGL form and eligibility against each year's notice.[1]
In private work the ladder runs from developer to senior and lead roles, and many people add an MCA. In government, SSC's Combined Graduate Level exam recruits graduates of any subject to most of its posts, and its notice prints the pay level for each.[6]
| Government post | Pay level (7th CPC) |
|---|---|
| Assistant Section Officer, Central Secretariat Service (SSC CGL 2026; any Bachelor's degree) | Level 7 (โน44,900 to โน1,42,400)[6] |
| Statistical Investigator Grade-II (SSC CGL 2026; Computer Application is an accepted degree subject) | Level 6 (โน35,400 to โน1,12,400)[6] |
Pay levels as printed in each official notice. We do not print private-sector salary figures without a survey source.

Both exist. AICTE's 2024-2027 handbook lists the BCA's duration as 3/4 years. A 4-year BCA lets you join an MCA in its second year through lateral entry.[1]

Yes, AICTE's row doesn't ask for a particular stream. The university may still ask for Maths in Class 12 or a Maths test in CUET (UG), where it is code 319.[4]
Yes. Most CGL posts need a Bachelor's degree from a recognised university in any subject, and the Statistical Investigator Grade-II post lists Computer Application among its accepted degree subjects.[6]
