BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration)

How long is a BBA in India, how do you get admission, and how does it lead to an MBA?

Quick answer

BBA, the Bachelor of Business Administration, is a 3-year degree after Class 12 in UGC's 2014 list of specified degrees, in the Business Administration, Commerce, Management and Finance group. That list also retired some older names: a BBS, BBM or BBE becomes a BBA or a B.Com (Hons). UGC's credit framework adds an optional fourth year for an honours degree and a summer internship of 2 to 4 credits. Universities that use CUET (UG) admit on its scores. The MBA after it takes 2 years, and CUET (PG) has a General - Management paper for central and participating universities.

What it is

BBA stands for Bachelor of Business Administration. UGC's 2014 gazette lists it in the Business Administration, Commerce, Management and Finance group as a Bachelor's degree of at least three years after Class 12, next to B.Com and BMS. It leads to the 2-year MBA or MMS, or an M.Com. Colleges that used to award a BBS, BBM or BBE were told to restructure it as a BBA or a B.Com (Hons).[1]

Who it suits, and who struggles

It tends to suit you if

  • You want to study how organisations are run, and an MBA or MMS is a likely next step.
  • You'd like time in a real workplace before you graduate. UGC's framework builds in a summer internship or apprenticeship of 2 to 4 credits.
  • You want a degree that keeps both a management Master's and the graduate-level government exams open.

You may struggle if

  • You want to qualify as a CA or CS. Those run through ICAI and ICSI, and the B.Com page shows how a degree fits alongside them.
  • You'd rather go deep into one academic subject, such as Economics or Mathematics, for an MA or M.Sc. A BA or B.Sc with that major is the more direct road.

This is a guide to the work the route asks of you, not a test of ability.[2]

The road

  1. Class 12 in any streamStage

UGC sets Class 12 as the entry level. The university's BBA rule decides whether a subject such as Maths is needed.

  2. CUET (UG) or the university's own admissionEntrance

Universities that use CUET (UG) admit on its scores. Pick the tests your BBA programme lists.

  3. BBA: 3 years, or 4 with honoursCourse

120 credits for the degree, 160 for honours, with a 2 to 4 credit summer internship.

  4. CUET (PG), CAT or the institute's test in the final yearEntrance

Final-year students could sit CUET (PG) 2026. The IIMs use CAT.

  5. MBA, MMS, M.Com or workWork

    A 2-year Master's, a job, or the graduate-level recruitment exams.

Where BBA sits among the commerce and management degrees

UGC's 2014 gazette lists BBA, the Bachelor of Business Administration, in its Business Administration, Commerce, Management and Finance group as a Bachelor's degree of at least three years, with Class 12 as the entry level. The same group has B.Com (3 years) and BMS, the Bachelor of Management Studies (3 years). The Master's degrees that follow are M.Com, MBA and MMS, each of at least 2 years.

The notification also restructured older degree names. A BBS, BBM or BBE becomes a BBA or a B.Com (Hons), and a BIBF becomes a BBA or a B.Com (International Business & Finance). If a college's prospectus still uses one of the old names, ask which degree your certificate will carry.[1]

Three years, or four with honours

Under UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework, the 3-year degree needs 120 credits and the 4-year honours degree needs 160. In the 3-year degree, at least 60 credits go to your major, 24 to the minor stream, 9 to multidisciplinary courses, 9 to skill enhancement courses and 8 to ability enhancement courses, with 6 to 8 for value-added courses and 2 to 4 for the summer internship.

The internship or apprenticeship happens in the summer term, in a firm, industry or organisation, or as training in labs with faculty. Commerce and Management is one of the framework's course groups, covering business management, accountancy, finance, financial institutions and fintech. If you score 75% or more across the first six semesters, the fourth year can go to a research project worth 12 credits.[2]

Getting in

Central universities, and the state and other universities that take part, admit on CUET (UG) scores. You can take up to five tests, counting languages and the General Aptitude Test, and NTA lets you pick them whatever subjects you studied in Class 12. Each test has 50 questions in 60 minutes, with 5 marks for a right answer and 1 taken off for a wrong one.

The tests that match commerce and management subjects include Business Studies (305), Accountancy/Book Keeping (301), Economics/Business Economics (309), Mathematics/Applied Mathematics (319) and the General Aptitude Test (501), which covers general knowledge, current affairs, numerical ability and reasoning. NTA asks you to choose subjects by the eligibility rule of the programme you want, so read each university's BBA page before you fill the form.[4]

Where a BBA leads

A BBA leads to a 2-year MBA, MMS or M.Com. At central and participating universities, CUET (PG) is the entrance. Its 2026 list of common papers included General - Management (COQP12) and Commerce (COQP08); you could choose up to four papers, each with 75 questions in 90 minutes, and students in the final year of their Bachelor's could apply. Registration ran from 14 December 2025 to 14 January 2026, and the test was held in March 2026.

AICTE's handbook lets a graduate of a 4-year BBA or BMS join an MBA or MMS in its second year through lateral entry, which saves a year. With a 3-year degree you start the MBA in the first year, and AICTE asks for at least 50% in the qualifying degree (45% for reserved categories).

The IIMs run their own entrance, CAT, and other institutes may set their own, so check which one each MBA you want accepts before your final year starts. For government work, each recruitment notice sets its own degree rule. CorrectForm has the form rules for SSC CGL.[5]

Growth

The usual ladder is BBA, then a 2-year MBA, MMS or M.Com, then work. At central and participating universities the entrance is CUET (PG), which had a General - Management paper (COQP12) in 2026. The IIMs use CAT, and other institutes may run their own test.

For government work, the recruitment notice for each exam lists the degree, age limits and any subject rule. CorrectForm keeps those for SSC CGL.[5]

If you don't get the BBA seat you wanted

Look at B.Com. UGC puts it in the same group, it also takes 3 years after Class 12, and the MBA asks only for a Bachelor's degree.[1]

B.Com

If you took Science or Arts in Class 12

NTA lets you choose CUET (UG) tests such as Business Studies or Accountancy whatever you studied in Class 12. Check that the BBA programme itself doesn't ask for a particular Class 12 subject.[4]

CUET UG

If you have to stop after one or two years

Under UGC's framework, 40 credits plus a 4-credit summer internship or work-based course earn a UG certificate, and 80 credits plus one earn a UG diploma. You can return and finish within seven years.[2]

Tips and tricks

  • Choose your five CUET tests from the BBA pages of the universities you want. NTA tells you to pick subjects by each programme's eligibility rule, and two universities can map different tests to the same BBA.[4]
  • If a prospectus calls the course BBM or BBS, ask what the degree certificate will say. UGC restructured those names as BBA or B.Com (Hons) in 2014.[1]
  • Treat the summer internship as a trial run for the area you might pick in an MBA.[2]
  • Put CUET (PG) on your calendar at the start of your final year. In the 2026 cycle, registration opened on 14 December 2025 and closed on 14 January 2026.[5]
  • Before your final year, list the MBA programmes you want and note which test each takes: CUET (PG), CAT or the institute's own.[5]

Questions people ask

Is BBA a 3-year or 4-year course?

UGC lists it as at least 3 years after Class 12. Universities that follow UGC's credit framework add an optional fourth year for an honours degree with 160 credits.[2]

Does a BBA college need AICTE approval?

Yes. AICTE's Approval Process Handbook 2024-2027 covers undergraduate management courses such as BBA and BMS, including those run by general degree colleges. Check that the college's BBA is on AICTE's approved list for your admission year.[3]

Can I do a BBA after Class 12 Science or Arts?

Usually, yes. NTA lets you choose CUET (UG) tests whatever subjects you took in Class 12. The university's BBA page can still ask for a particular Class 12 subject, so check it.[4]

Which CUET subjects should a BBA applicant take?

It depends on the university. Business Studies (305), Accountancy (301), Economics (309), Mathematics (319) and the General Aptitude Test (501) are the commerce-side options. You can take up to five tests, counting languages.[4]

Are BBM and BBS the same as BBA?

UGC's 2014 gazette restructured BBS, BBM and BBE as BBA or B.Com (Hons). Ask the college which name your degree certificate will carry.[1]

Can I do an MBA right after a BBA?

Yes. UGC lists the MBA as a 2-year Master's with a Bachelor's degree as the entry qualification. Each institute sets its own marks rule and entrance test.[1]

Is there a CUET (PG) paper for MBA?

Yes. CUET (PG) 2026 had a General - Management paper (COQP12) among its common papers, with 75 questions in 90 minutes. Each participating university says which paper its MBA uses.[5]

Does a 4-year BBA shorten the MBA?

It can. AICTE's handbook allows a graduate of a 4-year BBA or BMS to join the MBA or MMS in its second year through lateral entry. Ask the institute whether it offers lateral-entry seats.[3]
