Commerce after Class 10
I am thinking of Commerce in Class 11. What subjects does it involve, which Maths should I take, and when can I start the CA course?
Quick answer
CBSE groups Business Studies, Accountancy, Entrepreneurship and Economics as its business and commerce subjects, and a Commerce student usually takes some of them with a language and one more elective. The biggest choice inside Commerce is Maths. CBSE offers Mathematics and Applied Mathematics as separate subjects, and you can take only one. If chartered accountancy interests you, ICAI lets you register provisionally for the CA Foundation course as soon as you pass Class 10, then sit the Foundation exam once you have appeared in Class 12. The steps and rules are below, each with its official source.

CBSE rules are for the 2026-27 session. The JEE Main rules are from the 2026 bulletin; the 2027 bulletin was not out on 1 October 2026.
Commerce is CBSE's group of business electives: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics and Entrepreneurship. You take some of them with a language and one more subject, for two years.
Inside Commerce the big decision is Maths. You can take Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or neither, and you can't take both.[1]
Who it suits, and who struggles
It tends to suit you if
You like numbers that describe money: accounts, prices, budgets.
You are fine with steady written work. Accountancy and Business Studies are each 80 marks of theory and 20 of practical or project work.
Chartered accountancy interests you and you'd like to register early.
You may struggle if
You still want engineering. B.Tech through JEE Main needs Physics and Maths in Class 12.
You expect Commerce to be the easy option. CA is a chain of exams, and you have to pass every one.
This is a guide to the work the route asks of you, not a test of ability.[4]
The road
1
Pass Class 10Stage
Any board recognised in India.
2
Choose Commerce subjects for Class 11Your choice
From Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Entrepreneurship, plus a language. Decide on Maths now.
3
Optional: register for CA FoundationYour choice
ICAI accepts provisional registration after Class 10.
4
Class 12Stage
Same subjects as Class 11 under CBSE's scheme.
5
Degree or professional courseCourse
B.Com, BBA and similar degrees through university admission, or the CA Foundation exam after you appear in Class 12.
Mathematics is the subject that JEE Main papers name, so taking it keeps B.Planning open from Commerce, as long as the other marks rules are met. It is also the harder of CBSE's two Maths courses.
What it requires: For B.Planning through JEE Main Paper 2B: at least 50% in Maths and 50% aggregate in Class 12.
Entrance: JEE Main Paper 2B (if you want B.Planning)
CBSE runs Applied Mathematics as its own subject with its own code. You can't take it together with Mathematics. Before you pick it, read the bulletin of any entrance exam you might sit that names Mathematics as a required subject.
CBSE's scheme does not force a Maths subject on you. You can make up your five subjects from a language, the commerce electives, and another elective from Group A or a skill elective from Group S.
ICAI lets students who have passed Class 10 register provisionally for the CA Foundation course. You still need to have appeared in Class 12 before you can sit the Foundation exam, and the registration becomes regular once you pass Class 12.
What it requires: Register on or before 1 January for the May/June exam, or on or before 1 July for the November/December exam. That gives a 4-month study period before the exam.
Fees: Fees vary from one institution to the next. Check the institution's official fee notice before you apply.
A day in the work
Most of the marks come from written papers. In CBSE's scheme, Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics are each 80 marks of theory and 20 of practical or project work. Entrepreneurship is 70 and 30. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics are 80 marks of theory and 20 of internal assessment.
If you register for CA Foundation during Class 11, you study for it alongside school.[4]
Growth
Two ladders start here. One is university: B.Com, BBA and similar degrees, then work or a master's. The other is chartered accountancy. ICAI's course has three levels: Foundation, Intermediate and Final. Once you pass both groups of the Intermediate exam you can register for the Final course, and you also do 2 years of practical training.[7]
If this door closes: Plan B
If you decide you want engineering
B.E./B.Tech through JEE Main needs Physics and Maths in Class 12, which a Commerce combination doesn't have. Science after Class 10 is that route.[3]
B.Com, BBA and other degrees go through university admission. The universities that use CUET (UG) admit through it, and you choose the test subjects.[5]
B.E./B.Tech through JEE Main needs Physics and Maths in Class 12. A Commerce combination without Physics can't reach it.
B.Arch through JEE Main needs Physics and Maths. Business Studies is one of the subjects that can complete the combination, but it can't replace Physics.
NEET (UG) needs Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English, so it is closed to a Commerce combination.
The ICAI rule lets your child start the CA course during Class 11, but the Foundation exam can't be taken until they have appeared in Class 12. Starting early gives more study time, but every exam still has to be passed.
Ask the school which Maths course it offers to Commerce students. Some schools run only one of the two, and the choice is hard to change after Class 11 begins because CBSE expects the same subjects through Class 12.

Questions people ask
Can I start CA right after Class 10?
You can register provisionally with ICAI after passing Class 10. You sit the Foundation exam only after you have appeared in Class 12, and the provisional registration is regularised once you pass Class 12.[2]
Can I take Mathematics and Applied Mathematics together?
No. CBSE lists Mathematics (041) and Applied Mathematics (241) as a combination that can't be taken together.[1]
Can a Commerce student do B.Arch?
Only with Physics and Maths in Class 12. The Council of Architecture rule quoted in the JEE Main bulletin makes both compulsory. Business Studies can be the third subject, but it doesn't replace Physics.[3]
