Papers I and II make up the 300 merit marks. A wrong answer costs 1/3 of the question's marks. Paper I is set in English and translated into Telugu; Paper II is in English only. To be shortlisted you need an aggregate of 40% (OC, sportspersons, ex-servicemen, EWS), 35% (BC) or 30% (SC, ST, PBD). What an Assistant Environmental Engineer is

Assistant Environmental Engineer is a post in the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board. The notification does not list the duties, but Paper II shows what the board expects you to know: pollution control for air, water, soil and noise, solid and industrial waste, environmental law and environmental impact assessment, on top of core engineering topics such as fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.

APPSC runs the recruitment and the posts are filled for the whole state, with one merit list and no district or zone quota.[1]

Who it suits, and who may struggle

  • It suits a Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or Environmental engineer who wants a state government post in pollution control. The age limit of 44 leaves room for people who graduated years ago.
  • Other branches, such as Electrical or Computer Science, do not qualify. The AMIE route is open only through the Civil exam.
  • Paper II draws on several branches. A mechanical graduate meets ecosystems and biodiversity, and a civil graduate meets process calculations and thermodynamics, so plan time for the units outside your degree.
  • With 41 seats in the whole state, there are none for BC-C or SC Group-I. Check your row in the seats table before you invest months in preparation.

How the selection works

Everyone sits both papers of the computer-based test; missing one ends your candidature. Merit is the total of the two papers, out of 300, after normalisation if the test runs in several sessions. Candidates shortlisted from that merit list then take a 60-minute practical Computer Proficiency Test on office software, which you only need to pass.

There is no interview and no physical test. Appointment depends on certificate verification and a medical fitness check.[1]

Syllabus outline

Paper I, General Studies and Mental Ability: current events, general science, history of India with a focus on Andhra Pradesh, geography, polity and governance, the Indian economy, sustainable development, disaster management, logical reasoning and basic data analysis (mean, median, mode and variance).

Paper II, the common subject, in ten units: ecosystems; natural resources; biodiversity and biotic resources; engineering materials; fluid mechanics and hydraulics; process calculations and thermodynamics; air, water, soil and noise pollution and control technologies; solid and industrial waste management; global environmental problems, policies and legislation; and environmental impact assessment.[1]

Tips and tricks

  • Check your OTPR before you pay. The details used for the fee and age relaxation come from it and can't be changed in the correction window.[1]
  • List the Paper II units your branch never covered and start with those.[1]
  • A B.E. or B.Tech earned in distance mode counts only if AICTE recognised or approved the course.[1]
  • Practise office software early. The computer test comes after the written result and has its own pass mark.[1]
