B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture)
What do I need for B.Arch in India, which entrance test counts, and how is the 5-year course built?
Quick answer
B.Arch, the Bachelor of Architecture, is a 5-year degree regulated by the Council of Architecture (CoA) under the Architects Act, 1972. To be admitted you need Class 12 with Physics and Maths plus one more listed subject and at least 45% aggregate, or a 10+3 diploma with Maths and 45%, and a pass in an architecture aptitude test: the CoA's NATA or NTA's JEE Main Paper 2A. The course runs 10 semesters, one of them practical training in an architect's office, and you have at most 8 years to finish. You need the recognised degree to register with the CoA, and only a registered person may use the title architect.

JEE (Main) 2027 dates, fees and the Paper 2A scheme are from NTA's 2027 bulletin (24 October 2026). The 2027 bulletin does not repeat the Council's B.Arch subject rule or the NIT+ 75% rule, so those are read from the 2026 documents. The NATA 2027 brochure was not out when we checked on 1 November 2026.

B.Arch is the 5-year professional degree in architecture. The Council of Architecture sets its minimum standards: 10 semesters, a design studio running through the course, a semester of practical training in an architect's office and a design thesis at the end. The degree is the recognised qualification that lets you register with the Council as an architect.[1]
Who it suits, and who struggles
It tends to suit you if
You enjoy drawing and making things, and you can take criticism of your work in front of a jury. Studio projects are judged that way all through the course.
You want a professional title with a register behind it.
You are fine with five years plus a thesis, with six months of the course spent working in an office.
You may struggle if
You want a degree finished in three or four years. B.Arch takes five, and failing a design studio holds up the next one.
You dislike drawing tests. Both NATA and JEE Main Paper 2A include one, and the IITs' AAT asks you to bring your own drawing and colouring materials.
This is a guide to the work the route asks of you, not a test of ability.[1]
NATA admits nobody itself. State authorities and institutions admit on its score; NITs use the Paper 2A rank.

Who sets the rules
The Council of Architecture is a statutory body under the Ministry of Education, set up by the Architects Act, 1972. It keeps the register of architects and sets the minimum standards for architectural education, which since November 2020 means the CoA (Minimum Standards of Architectural Education) Regulations, 2020. The NATA 2026 brochure counted about 369 institutions teaching architecture in India.
Anyone who wants to practise as an architect, or use the title, must be registered with the Council. To register you need a recognised qualification earned under these regulations. The regulations say that a student admitted to the first year without meeting the Council's eligibility rule does not hold a recognised qualification and cannot register, even after five years of study.[2]
The Class 12 rule, as amended
The 2020 regulations as first printed asked for 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Maths. The Council amended the rule in a gazette notification of 19 July 2023, and both NTA's JEE Main 2026 bulletin and the NATA 2026 brochure quote the amended text: Class 12 or equivalent with Physics and Maths as compulsory subjects, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, a technical vocational subject, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practices, Engineering Graphics or Business Studies, with at least 45% aggregate. A 10+3 diploma with Maths as a compulsory subject and 45% aggregate also qualifies.
NITs ask for more. Seats at NITs and other NIT+ institutes filled on the Paper 2A rank need Physics, Chemistry and Maths plus two more subjects, and 75% aggregate in five subjects (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board. Reservation and any relaxation of marks follow the central or state government's policy.[3]
NATA, JEE Main Paper 2A and the IIT test
The regulations require a pass in an aptitude test in architecture, and no quota, management or NRI seat is exempt. The NATA 2026 brochure names two tests that count: NATA, run by the Council since 2006, and JEE Main Paper 2A, run by NTA. In 2026, JEE Main Paper 2A had Mathematics (25 questions, 100 marks), an Aptitude Test (50 questions, 200 marks) and a Drawing Test (2 questions, 100 marks) on an A4 sheet, 400 marks in 3 hours.
For 2027 the paper keeps the same shape: Mathematics (25 questions, 100 marks) and the Aptitude Test (50 questions, 200 marks) on computer, then a Drawing Test (2 questions, 100 marks) by hand on an A4 sheet, 400 marks in all. Session 1 is on 20 to 24 and 28 January 2027, and the form is open until 22 November 2026, or 26 November with a Rs 500 late fee. Session 2 is on 2 to 7 April 2027, with forms from 5 January to 3 February 2027.
Only IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee offer B.Arch among the IITs. For those seats you must qualify in JEE Advanced and then pass the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT), one 3-hour paper in English. The AAT is pass or fail, and seats go by your JEE Advanced rank.[3]
Inside the five years
Each semester runs 15 to 18 working weeks and carries 26 to 30 credits, and the whole degree comes to 260 to 300 credits. Half the credits go to professional core courses, architectural design among them, and a fifth to building sciences and applied engineering. You cannot take the next design studio until you have cleared the previous one, and much of your work is judged by a jury of internal and external examiners.
In the 8th or 9th semester you spend six months in the office of an architect with at least 5 years' experience, or in an approved organisation in an allied field. You must finish that training before you start the 10th-semester design thesis. If you cannot complete the course, a university may offer an exit option once you have earned all the credits of the first three years.[1]

Growth
After the degree, registration with the Council of Architecture is what lets you practise and call yourself an architect; the Architects Act makes a false claim to the title a criminal offence. Professional conduct, conditions of engagement and the scale of charges are set by the Architects (Professional Conduct) Regulations, 1989.
During training you work under registered architects, in a private practice or a government architecture department. Government posts for architects are filled through recruitment notices; read each one for the qualification it asks for.[2]
If this door closes: Plan B
If you missed Chemistry, or took Computer Science or Business Studies instead
Physics and Maths are the only compulsory subjects in the CoA rule. Any one of the listed third subjects completes it, but NIT seats on the Paper 2A rank still ask for Physics, Chemistry and Maths.[3]
The regulations let a university offer an exit option once you have earned all the credits of the first three years. Ask your university what it awards at that point.[1]

Tips and tricks
Read the 45% rule from the NATA brochure or the JEE Main bulletin, not from an old prospectus. The 2020 regulations first asked for 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Maths; the 2023 amendment changed it.[2]
If you want an NIT seat, check your subjects against the Paper 2A rule too: it needs Physics, Chemistry and Maths plus two more, which is stricter than the Council's own rule.[3]
Filled the JEE Main 2027 form wrongly? Use the correction window from 27 to 29 November 2026. NTA also lets you submit a fresh form until 22 November, but it keeps only the last paid form and does not refund the earlier fee.[5]
Before you pay any fee, make sure your marks meet the Council's rule. A student admitted without it cannot register as an architect even after finishing the course.[1]
Start looking for your practical-training office in the semester before it. The mentor must be an architect with at least 5 years' experience, and the training must be done before the thesis.[1]
Practise drawing on an A4 sheet against the clock. Paper 2A's Drawing Test is on A4 paper and both of its questions are drawn by hand.[3]
Questions people ask
Is Chemistry compulsory for B.Arch?
Not under the Council of Architecture's amended rule. Physics and Maths are compulsory, and Chemistry is one of eight subjects that can complete the combination. NIT seats filled on the JEE Main Paper 2A rank still ask for Physics, Chemistry and Maths.[3]
What percentage do I need in Class 12 for B.Arch?
At least 45% aggregate under the Council's rule. NITs and other NIT+ institutes ask for 75% aggregate in five subjects (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a place in your board's top 20 percentile.[3]
Can I do B.Arch after a diploma?
Yes, if it is a 10+3 diploma with Maths as a compulsory subject and you scored at least 45% aggregate. You still need to pass NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A.[2]
Which is better for B.Arch, NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A?
Both count for the Council's aptitude-test rule. NATA scores are used by state authorities and institutions; the Paper 2A rank is used for NITs and other seats through JoSAA and CSAB.[2]
When is JEE Main 2027 Paper 2A for B.Arch?
Session 1 is on 20 to 24 and 28 January 2027, and Session 2 on 2 to 7 April 2027. The Session 1 form closes on 22 November 2026. For one paper the fee per session is Rs 1,000 for General men, Rs 900 for EWS and OBC (NCL) men, Rs 800 for women in these groups, and Rs 500 for SC, ST, PwD and third gender candidates, at centres in India.[4]
How long is the B.Arch course?
Five years, or 10 semesters, including one semester of practical training. You must finish within 8 years, and a university can grant one extra year in special cases.[1]
Can I call myself an architect after B.Arch?
Only once you are registered with the Council of Architecture. The Architects Act makes it an offence to use the title without registration.[2]
Do IITs offer B.Arch?
Three do: IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee. You need to qualify in JEE Advanced and pass the Architecture Aptitude Test, and seats go by your JEE Advanced rank.[6]
