SSC MTS and Havaldar (Multi-Tasking Staff Examination)
Am I eligible for SSC MTS or Havaldar with a 10th pass and my age, and how do Session-I, Session-II, the walking test and my state preferences decide where I am posted?
The Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff and Havaldar Examination is how the Staff Selection Commission fills Level-1 posts in central government offices across the states, plus Havaldar posts in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN). A 10th pass is enough. The 2025 cycle has 7,948 tentative posts. Its computer test ran in February 2026, and the Havaldar walking and physical tests followed in August 2026. This page follows the SSC notice of 26 June 2025 (F.No. E/15/2025-C-2) and the results published since.
This page may be out of date. It was due for a re-check on 30 June 2027. Confirm every rule with the official source before acting on it.
2025 cycle: the computer-based exam was held 4-20 February 2026 and the Havaldar PET/PST 24-31 August 2026; the first allocation result is awaited. No 2026 notice on ssc.gov.in as of 2 November 2026.

MTS is SSC's exam for 10th-pass candidates. Posts are spread across central ministries, departments and offices in every state and union territory, plus constitutional and statutory bodies. Havaldar posts go to CBIC and CBN under the Department of Revenue.
Every post in this exam is Group C, non-gazetted, at Pay Level-1. The test covers arithmetic, reasoning, basic English and general awareness, the last set up to class 10 standard.[1]
- SSC received 36,19,834 applications. The computer-based exam ran from 4 to 20 February 2026, and 8,04,633 candidates sat it.
- On 3 August 2026 SSC shortlisted 8,071 candidates for the Havaldar physical tests, at 7 candidates per vacancy. On 7 October 2026 it added 542 more after a tribunal order, but their candidature is withheld.
- CBIC held the walking and physical tests at its centres from 24 to 31 August 2026.
- SSC will declare the first allocation result for MTS and Havaldar together, once the Havaldar tests are done. Watch ssc.gov.in for it.
- As of 2 November 2026, SSC had not posted a notice for a 2026 MTS exam on its notice board.

- SSC marks Session-I first. Session-II is marked only if you clear Session-I.
- The minimum score in each session is 30% for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 20% for all other categories.
- Your rank comes only from your normalised Session-II score. Session-I just has to be cleared.
- MTS cut-offs are set separately by state or UT, category and age group. If you fit both age groups, SSC fills the 18-25 vacancies first.
- If you fail the Havaldar physical tests, your MTS candidature stays valid on your merit.
- There is one final select list. Once SSC allocates you a post and state, it will not change it if you later fail a post's physical, medical or education standard.
Source[1]
- You are considered only for the post-and-state combinations you list in the form, however high your score.
- "MTS Others" is a separate pool that belongs to no state. Picking only that keeps you out of every state's MTS vacancies.
- SSC treats the preferences in the form as final and never lets you change them later. It advises giving as many as you can.

Tips and tricks
- List every state you would actually join. Delhi alone has 1,961 of the 18-25 posts, and a state left out of your form is never considered for you.[2]
- Attempt every Session-I question you can. There is no negative marking there, and clearing it is what unlocks Session-II.[1]
- If you are aiming for Havaldar, practise the timed walk well before the test. The walk only has to be passed, but failing it drops you to the MTS list.[1]
