Student visa funds by country: official figures with a rupee converter

How much money does each country ask an Indian student to show for a student visa, according to its own government page, and what is that in rupees?

Quick answer

Each government publishes its own figure for the money a student must show, and they are counted differently: per month, per year, or for the whole stay, usually on top of tuition. Re-checked on 30 and 31 October 2026, the figures are £1,529 a month in London (UK), CAD 23,448 a year (Canada), AUD 29,710 a year (Australia), €11,904 a year in a blocked account (Germany), €10,000 a year (Ireland), NZD 20,000 a year (New Zealand) and €877.50 a month (France). The US sets no fixed figure. The converter turns any of them into rupees at the RBI reference rate.

As of 31 October 2026: we re-read each amount here on the official page linked next to it (Australia's on 30 October). The rupee rates are the RBI reference rates of 8 October 2026. Governments revise these amounts, often once a year, so open the official page again before you pay or apply.

Arithmetic only, not financial advice. The converter runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. Rupee values use the rates RBI showed at 1:00 pm on 8 October 2026 (source FBIL); your bank's rate on the day you transfer will differ.

How to read these figures

The amounts cover different things. The UK counts up to 9 months and wants the money held for 28 days in a row. Canada and Australia count a year of living costs and add more for each family member. Germany wants the year locked in a blocked account with a €992 monthly cap. France counts per month, so a 10-month stay needs ten times €877.50. In all of them, tuition comes on top.[1]

Why only three rupee rates

RBI shows reference rates for the US dollar, pound sterling, euro and a few other currencies, sourced from FBIL. It publishes none for the Canadian, Australian or New Zealand dollar. For those, type the rate from your bank's page into the converter, and it does the multiplication.[10]

Tips and tricks

  • Convert at your own bank's rate on the day you move the money; the RBI figure is a reference, not a price you can buy at.
  • Look at the date on each government page. Canada's figure went up for applications from 1 September 2026.[2]
  • Count family members: Canada and Australia add an amount for each person who comes with you.
  • Keep the statement trail clean. Most countries read several months of bank history, not one balance.

Questions people ask

Which country asks students to show the most money?

They count differently, so compare like with like. Per year, as re-checked on 30 and 31 October 2026: Australia AUD 29,710, Canada CAD 23,448, New Zealand NZD 20,000, Germany €11,904 and Ireland €10,000. The UK counts £1,529 a month in London for up to 9 months.[1]

What exchange rate does the converter use?

The rates RBI showed at 1:00 pm on 8 October 2026, sourced from FBIL: 96.7733 rupees per US dollar, 127.7414 per pound and 108.3774 per euro.[9]

Why can I not convert Canadian or Australian dollars automatically?

Neither RBI nor FBIL publishes a reference rate for the Canadian, Australian or New Zealand dollar, so you type the rate you see.[10]

Does the US have a fixed proof-of-funds amount?

No. DHS says the student or a sponsor must show enough money for tuition and living expenses, and the school checks it before issuing the Form I-20.[8]
