West Bengal Police Constable (WBPRB)

Can I become a constable in West Bengal Police with Madhyamik, and what do the written test, physical test and interview involve?

Quick answer

The West Bengal Police Recruitment Board (WBPRB) recruits Constables for West Bengal Police. Its last drive, Constables in West Bengal Police - 2024 (Notice WBPRB/NOTICE-2024/13), had 11,749 posts: 8,212 for men and 3,537 for women. You need a Madhyamik pass or an equivalent, an age of 18 to 30 on the notice's cut-off date (more for reserved categories), and the ability to speak, read and write Bengali, unless you are a permanent resident of the Darjeeling or Kalimpong hill sub-divisions. Selection runs through an 85-mark written test, a qualifying height and weight check, a timed run, and a 15-mark interview; the merit list adds the written and interview marks. No application is open now. The 2024 drive's final merit list came out on 24 September 2026, and WBPRB has not listed a newer constable drive for West Bengal Police.

The written test is OMR-based: 85 questions in 1 hour, with 1/4 mark taken off for each wrong answer. The board sets qualifying marks to shortlist for the PMT. In the interview the board also tests whether you can speak, read and write Bengali or Nepali. Ties in the final list go to the higher written score, then to the older candidate.[2]

Age relaxation on the upper limit of 30

WhoRelaxation
Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes5 years
OBC (the 2024 notice named OBC-A and OBC-B)3 years
Third Gender persons3 years
Civic Volunteers and Village Police Volunteers serving in West Bengal Police5 years
Ex-servicemenYears of completed service, up to an age of 40
NVF and Home Guards serving in West Bengal PoliceAs per existing government rules

Volunteers, NVF and Home Guards also needed 3 years of service on 1 January 2024. Your date of birth is taken from your Madhyamik admit card or certificate. SC, ST and OBC candidates from other states count as unreserved.[2]

What the job is

A Constable is the entry rank of West Bengal Police. WBPRB runs the recruitment, and an Assistant Inspector General of Police, a Superintendent of Police or a Commandant makes the appointment. The 2024 notice says the pay follows the existing rules and prints no scale, so this page gives none.[2]

Who it suits, and who may struggle

  • It suits someone who has passed Madhyamik, is fit enough for the height, weight and running standards, and reads and writes Bengali (or lives in the Darjeeling or Kalimpong hills).
  • The written test is short: 85 questions in an hour, with a quarter mark lost for each wrong answer, so careless guessing costs you.
  • Men need 167 cm and must run 1,600 m in 6 minutes 30 seconds; women need 160 cm and 800 m in 4 minutes. Gorkha, Garhwali, Rajbanshi and ST candidates have lower height and weight limits.
  • Many seats are horizontal quotas for exempted categories, NVF and Home Guards, ex-servicemen, civic volunteers and sportspersons. In the 2024 drive WBPRB said appointments under these quotas depend on writ petitions pending in the Calcutta High Court.

How the selection works

The written test comes first. A limited number of candidates, by written marks, go on to the PMT, where height and weight are checked by machine and men's chest by tape. Those who pass the PMT run the PET once. Everyone who passes the PET is called for the interview, where the board also checks your Bengali or Nepali.

The final merit list adds the written marks (out of 85) and the interview marks (out of 15). Selected candidates then fill in a verification roll for a character check and go for a medical examination at a state government hospital; only those declared fit are appointed. Your face, biometrics and iris may be captured at each stage and matched with the earlier ones.[2]

How long the 2024 drive took

Applications ran from 7 March to 5 April 2024. The written test was scheduled for 30 November 2025, and the final merit list was published on 24 September 2026, about two and a half years after the form closed.

In August 2026 West Bengal adopted a new State OBC list of 66 classes, and WBPRB revised the drive's vacancy table: the separate OBC-A and OBC-B rows became one OBC row, with the total unchanged at 11,749.[4]

Tips and tricks

  • Train for the run before the written result comes out. The PET gives you one attempt only.[2]
  • Keep your category certificate current. In 2024, OBC certificates issued before 1 January 2023 had to be revalidated for the interview; without one you could be considered only for unreserved seats, and only within the unreserved age limit.[2]
  • From the admit-card stage the board used your Aadhaar-linked mobile number for every message, so keep that number active.[3]
  • Keep looking like the photo you upload. The PMT and PET boards can turn you away if your appearance doesn't closely match it.[2]
