Each question carries one mark. A typed English descriptive test (essay 10, precis 10, comprehension 10; 30 minutes) follows straight after. It is qualifying only and is checked only if you clear every objective section. One quarter of a question's marks is cut for each wrong answer in the prelims and the mains.[1]

What an NICL Administrative Officer does and where you serve

Scale I is NICL's entry grade for officers. You can be posted or transferred anywhere in India, and the minimum stay at the first posting is five years. Specialist officers may have to stay in their specialisation for at least ten years, though they remain eligible for promotion. Company Secretaries are posted mainly at the Head Office in Kolkata.

Probation lasts one year and can be extended twice by six months. During probation you must pass the non-life Licentiate Examination of the Insurance Institute of India; your service is confirmed only after you pass, and failing it within the extended period can end your job.[1]

The four-year bond

Before joining you sign an undertaking to serve NICL for at least four years, probation included, backed by a stamped bond with two sureties (not blood relatives) for one year's gross salary. Resigning before four years makes you liable for liquidated damages equal to one year's gross salary from the probation year, which can be reduced in proportion to the service you have put in.

If you resign or are removed during probation itself, you are liable to repay the gross salary for your whole service plus Rs 25,000 towards training costs. Weigh this before you accept, especially if you are also preparing for other exams.[1]

How the three stages work

Phase I is a one-hour online prelims of 100 questions in three separately timed sections: English Language (30), Reasoning Ability (35) and Quantitative Aptitude (35), 20 minutes each. It is the same for every discipline. You must clear each section, and about 15 times the vacancies in each category go on to the mains.

Phase II is the main exam in the table above, with a sixth, technical section for Specialists. You need a minimum total in the objective part and a pass in the descriptive test to be called for interview. The final merit list orders candidates by consolidated marks from the online test and the interview; a tie goes to the higher interview mark, then to the older candidate. Appointment also needs a medical fitness check.[1]

Tips and tricks

  • Check your aggregate percentage the way NICL counts it before you apply. NICL adds all subjects of all years, and 59.99% counts as below 60%.[1]
  • Practise typing a short essay and a precis on a computer. The descriptive test is typed and comes straight after the three-hour objective paper.[1]
  • Do not ignore Computer Knowledge. It is a full section in the mains with its own pass mark, for Generalists and Specialists alike.[1]
  • Specialists: revise your own discipline for the technical section, which carries 50 of the 250 objective marks.[1]

Questions people ask

What is the age limit for NICL AO 2026?

21 to 30 years on 1 October 2026, so candidates born from 2 October 1996 to 1 October 2005 can apply. SC and ST get 5 more years, OBC (non-creamy layer) 3, and PwBD 10 to 15 depending on category, with a cap of 45.[1]

What percentage do I need for NICL AO?

At least 60% in your graduation or postgraduation (55% for SC, ST and PwBD), worked out on all subjects of all years. Fractions are ignored, so 59.99% is below 60%.[1]

Is there negative marking in the NICL AO exam?

Yes. In the objective tests of both the prelims and the mains, one quarter of the marks for a question is deducted for each wrong answer. A question left blank costs nothing.[1]

What is the salary of an NICL AO?

The starting basic pay is Rs 82,485 in the scale 82,485-1,56,745. NICL puts total pay at about Rs 1,14,000 a month in metropolitan centres, with NPS pension, gratuity and medical benefits as per its rules.[1]

Can I apply for both Generalist and Specialist in NICL AO?

No. You can apply for one discipline only. If you register more than once, NICL keeps only your latest complete application and the fee for the others is forfeited.[1]

Does the NICL AO descriptive test count in the merit list?

No. The 30-mark typed English test is qualifying. Its marks are not used for the interview shortlist or the final selection, but you must pass it.[1]
