LIC AAO (Assistant Administrative Officer, Generalist)

What is the LIC Assistant Administrative Officer (Generalist) post, who can apply, how does the three-stage selection work, what does it pay, and what marks did the last batch need?

Quick answer

An Assistant Administrative Officer (AAO) is an entry-level officer at the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). The Generalist post is open to graduates of any discipline aged 21 to 30. Selection runs in three stages: an online preliminary exam, an online main exam with a typed English paper, and an interview, followed by a pre-recruitment medical exam. Only the main exam and the interview count for the final merit list. This page follows LIC's notice for the AAO (Generalist) 32nd Batch, notified on 16 August 2025, and the cut-offs LIC published for that batch.

What an LIC AAO does and where you serve

AAO is LIC's entry grade for officers. The posts are regular, and LIC can post or transfer you anywhere in India.

Most of the vacancies are in mofussil (small-town) branches, the notice says. After training, selected candidates serve at least five years in mofussil branches outside their home zone, and requests for a particular place are not entertained.

You start on a one-year probation, which LIC can stretch to two years. Before joining, you also sign an undertaking to serve LIC for at least four years from joining. Leaving earlier makes you liable to pay Rs 5,00,000 as liquidated damages, backed by a stamped and notarised indemnity deed.[1]

Who can apply

Any graduate can apply for the Generalist post. The degree must be from a university or institute recognised by the Government of India or an approved regulator, and LIC does not accept 'equivalent' qualifications. Your result must be out by the eligibility date (1 August 2025 for the 32nd Batch); the date on your mark sheet or provisional certificate is what counts.

The age band is 21 to 30 on the same date. For the 32nd Batch that meant a date of birth from 2 August 1995 to 1 August 2004. The relaxation table above adds years for reserved categories, PwBD candidates, ex-servicemen and confirmed LIC employees.

You may apply for only one of the posts notified together (AAO Generalist, the AAO Specialist posts and Assistant Engineer). If you register more than once, LIC keeps the latest complete application and the other fees are forfeited.[1]

How the three stages work

The prelims are a one-hour screening test with three timed sections. You must clear every section on its own, and there is no negative marking. LIC then takes about 20 candidates per vacancy in each category to the mains.

The mains have four objective sections worth 300 marks, followed straight away by a 25-mark English paper that you type on the computer. Again there is no negative marking, and each section has its own pass mark. The insurance and financial-market section covers ground a general degree may not.

Interview calls go to about three candidates per vacancy. Your final rank is your mains score plus your interview score. When two candidates tie, LIC places the one with the higher postgraduate qualification first and then the older candidate. A pre-recruitment medical exam comes last.[1]

Pay and benefits at joining

The basic pay is Rs 88,635 a month in the scale Rs 88,635 - 4,385 (14) - 1,50,025 - 4,750 (4) - 1,69,025. With house rent and city compensatory allowances, LIC puts the total at the start of the scale at about Rs 1,26,000 a month in an 'A' class city. Smaller cities pay less because those allowances depend on the city class.

The notice also lists the defined contributory pension, gratuity, LTC, group medical and accident cover, and allowances for passing Insurance Institute of India and actuarial exams, all as per LIC's rules.[1]

Tips and tricks

  • Give the insurance and financial-market section real time. It carries 60 of the 300 mains marks and has its own pass mark.[1]
  • Practise typing short emails and precis on a computer. The English descriptive paper is typed, not handwritten, and you must pass it even though it does not add to your rank.[1]
  • Keep your final-year result date handy. LIC goes by the date printed on the mark sheet or provisional certificate, and it must fall on or before the eligibility date.[1]
  • Do not register twice for the posts notified together. LIC keeps only your latest complete application and forfeits the fee on the others.[1]
