BPSC School Teacher Recruitment Exam (TRE 4.0)
Can I apply for BPSC TRE 4.0 with my degree and teacher eligibility test, and how does the teacher recruitment exam pick the merit list?
The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) runs the School Teacher Recruitment Exam, phase four (TRE 4.0), for the Education Department of Bihar. Advertisement 15/2026, dated 22 September 2026, and a corrigendum of 29 September put the total at 33,320 posts across four levels: Class 1-5, Class 6-8, Class 9-10 and Class 11-12. Each level asks for its own teacher training (D.El.Ed, B.Ed or an equivalent the advert lists) and its own eligibility test: CTET or BTET for Class 1-8, Bihar STET for Class 9-12. Selection is one objective paper of 150 questions per level, with a third of a mark lost for each wrong or blank answer and no interview. The advert closed applications on 26 October 2026; BPSC's notice of 26 October moved the last date to 3 November 2026, with the fee due by 2 November.
This page may be out of date. It was due for a re-check on 30 April 2027. Confirm every rule with the official source before acting on it.
Applications are open until 3 November 2026 (fee by 2 November). BPSC has not announced the exam date.

TRE 4.0 posts by school level
| Level | Posts | Pay printed in the advert |
|---|---|---|
| Primary, Class 1-5 | 3,847 | Initial pay Rs 25,000 + state allowances |
| Middle, Class 6-8 | 8,563 | Initial pay Rs 28,000 + state allowances |
| Secondary, Class 9-10 (incl. special school teachers) | 4,370 (3,877 + 493) | Basic pay Rs 31,000 a month + state allowances |
| Higher secondary, Class 11-12 | 16,540 (16,101 + 439) | Basic pay Rs 32,000 a month + state allowances |
All four are non-gazetted School Teacher posts. The 493 and 439 posts came from a supplementary requisition (Bangla, Fine Arts, Dance, Maithili, Arabic, Persian, Music and special school teachers in Class 9-10; Bangla, Bhojpuri, Magahi, Maithili, Pali, Prakrit, Arabic and Persian in Class 11-12). Women get a 50% horizontal share in Class 1-8 and 35% in Class 9-12.[1]
| Level | Common routes | Eligibility test |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1-5 | Class 12 with 50% + 2-year D.El.Ed; or Class 12 with 50% + 4-year B.El.Ed; or graduation + 2-year D.El.Ed | CTET or BTET Paper I |
| Class 6-8 | Graduation + 2-year D.El.Ed; or graduation/post-graduation with 50% + B.Ed; or 4-year B.A.Ed/B.Sc.Ed | CTET or BTET Paper II |
| Class 9-10 | Graduation or post-graduation in the subject with 50% + B.Ed; or 4-year B.A.Ed/B.Sc.Ed in the subject | STET Paper I |
| Class 11-12 | Post-graduation in the subject with 50% + B.Ed; or 55% post-graduation + 3-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed | STET Paper II |
SC, ST, EBC, BC and disabled candidates get 5 percentage points off the minimum marks. Computer Science teachers for Class 11-12 do not need a B.Ed. NIOS's 18-month D.El.Ed counts, as the Supreme Court ordered.[1]
| Part | Class 1-5 | Class 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12 |
|---|---|---|
| Part I: Language (qualifying, at least 30%) | 30 questions | 30 questions |
| Part II: General Studies | 120 questions | 40 questions |
| Part III: Your subject | None | 80 questions |
| Total | 150 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes | 150 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes |
Part I tests working English and Hindi, Urdu or Bangla; it only has to be passed. Merit for Class 1-5 uses Part II marks; for the other levels it uses Parts II and III together. Each question has five options, and option E means you are not answering it. Leaving all five blank costs 1/3 mark, the same as a wrong answer.[1]
| Who | Upper limit |
|---|---|
| Unreserved men | 37 years |
| Unreserved women; BC and EBC men and women | 40 years |
| SC and ST men and women; transgender candidates | 42 years |
| Disabled candidates (PwBD) | 10 more years |
| Ex-servicemen | 3 years plus defence service, actual age not over 57 on the application date |
| Regular Bihar government servants | 5 years, only while under 5 BPSC attempts since 12 December 2022 |
The minimum age is counted on a different day, 1 August 2026: 18 for Class 1-8 posts and 21 for Class 9-12 posts. Teachers already working under Panchayati Raj or urban local bodies have a relaxed upper limit; the advert gives no figure.[1]
TRE 4.0 is the fourth phase of Bihar's school teacher recruitment through BPSC. The Commission conducts the written exam and publishes the result; the Education Department then checks your documents and allots the district. The advert replaces BPSC's earlier Advertisement 14/2026 of 18 August 2026, which it cancels.[1]
- It suits someone who already holds the training for the level they want (D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed or B.Ed) and has passed the matching CTET, BTET or STET paper.
- Reservation, including the women's quota, is only for permanent residents of Bihar. Candidates from other states compete as unreserved and need 60% in CTET, the general-category mark.
- 40% of all posts are kept for people who passed Class 10 or Class 12 from an institution in Bihar (undivided Bihar counts). Seats left unfilled in that 40% go to qualified candidates in the other 60%.
- If you are still waiting on STET 2026, you can apply, but you get an admit card only if you pass STET before the written exam.

There is one written exam and no interview. To make the merit list you need at least 40% (unreserved), 36.5% (BC), 34% (EBC) or 32% (SC, ST, women and disabled candidates). The 32% mark for women and disabled candidates applies only to Bihar residents. There is no re-evaluation.
If you qualify for several levels, you fill one form and rank the levels. BPSC declares your result for the highest level you pass in that order, and your other choices lapse. Guest teachers already in service get 5 bonus marks for each year, up to 25, added after they clear the minimum mark. BPSC goes by what you declare in the form; the Education Department checks every certificate before appointment and can revise the list.[1]
Fees and applications opened on 25 September 2026. The advert set 25 October for the fee and 26 October for the form; BPSC's notice of 26 October 2026 moved them to 2 and 3 November 2026. That notice links the extension to a Supreme Court order of 1 August 2025 on the age limit for the petitioners in one case. The exam date has not been announced, and the advert says the exam may run in more than one phase.[3]
Tips and tricks
- Rank your levels carefully. Your result is declared only for the highest level you pass, so put the one you want most first.[1]
- A wrong answer and a question with no option marked both cost 1/3 mark. Only option E (not answering) costs nothing, so mark E for any question you skip.[1]
- Every certificate you rely on must be dated on or before the last date of the form. One issued after it is not accepted, even if the date is extended.[1]
- Married women claiming reservation need caste, residence and non-creamy-layer certificates in the father's name and address, not the husband's.[1]
