APPSC English and Telugu Reporters 2026

Can I apply for APPSC English or Telugu Reporter in the A.P. Legislature Secretariat with my degree and shorthand certificates, and how does the shorthand exam work?

Quick answer

English Reporter and Telugu Reporter are shorthand posts in the A.P. Legislature Secretariat Service, and APPSC fills them by direct recruitment. Notification No. 22/2026, dated 13 October 2026, offers 10 English Reporter posts and 1 Telugu Reporter post, all state-wide. You apply online at psc.ap.gov.in until 2 November 2026, 11:59 pm; APPSC's 27 October extension did not include this notice. You need a degree plus shorthand and typewriting certificates: English shorthand at 150 words a minute for the English post, Telugu shorthand and typewriting at the higher grade for the Telugu post. The age limit is 18 to 44 on 1 July 2026. Selection rests on a general studies paper and a shorthand paper, 300 marks in all, plus a qualifying computer test.

Merit is out of 300. A wrong answer in the objective paper costs 1/3 of the question's marks. To be shortlisted you need an aggregate of 40% (OC, sportspersons, ex-servicemen, EWS), 35% (BC) or 30% (SC, ST, PBD). The computer test needs 40 (OC), 35 (BC) or 30 (SC, ST, PBD) out of 100, and typing speed makes up 25% of it.[1]

What a Reporter in the Legislature Secretariat is

Reporters belong to the A.P. Legislature Secretariat Service. The notification does not list their duties, but the exam shows the core skill: taking dictation in shorthand at speed and writing it out word for word. English Reporters are tested at 150 words a minute, Telugu Reporters at 80.

APPSC runs the recruitment. Both posts are state-wide, so you compete with candidates from across the state.[1]

Who it suits, and who may struggle

  • It suits a graduate who already holds the shorthand and typewriting certificates the notice names. These take time to earn, so this is not a post to start from zero for this cycle.
  • The English post asks for shorthand at the grade with a speed of at least 150 words a minute. A certificate at a lower speed does not meet the rule.
  • The single Telugu Reporter post is a carried-forward ST seat, so only ST candidates can take it this time.
  • BC-A, BC-B and EWS candidates have no seat in this notice. Check your row in the seats table before you pay.

How the selection works

You sit both papers; missing one ends your candidature. Paper I is a computer-based objective test. Paper II is a conventional shorthand test: you take down the dictated passage and then write it out in longhand within the time allowed. Merit is the total of the two papers, out of 300.

You must also pass a 60-minute practical Computer Proficiency Test on office software, which includes a typing-speed part. There is no interview. Equal marks are broken by age, the older candidate first, but a preferred qualification counts before age.[1]

Syllabus outline

Paper I, General Studies and Mental Ability: current events, general science, history of India with a focus on Andhra Pradesh, geography, polity and governance, the Indian economy and planning, sustainable development, disaster management, logical reasoning and basic data analysis.

Paper II has no written syllabus beyond the dictation itself: a passage at the set speed, transcribed verbatim. The computer test covers computer basics in multiple-choice questions, then practical tasks in a word processor, a spreadsheet and presentation software, plus a typing-speed check.[1]

Tips and tricks

  • Check your OTPR before you pay. The details used for the fee and age relaxation come from it and can't be changed in the correction window.[1]
  • Practise longhand transcription as well as dictation. English Reporters get 90 minutes to write out 750 words in longhand.[1]
  • Your certificates must be in hand on 13 October 2026, the notification date.[1]
  • Practise typing on a computer as well. The computer test has its own pass mark, and typing speed is a quarter of it.[1]
  • A degree earned through an open university or distance mode counts only if the Distance Education Council recognised it.[1]
