The three papers make up the 450 merit marks. A wrong answer costs 1/3 of the question's marks. Paper 1 is set in English and translated into Telugu; Papers 2 and 3 are in English only. To be shortlisted you need an aggregate of 40% (OC, sportspersons, ex-servicemen, EWS), 35% (BC) or 30% (SC, ST, PBD). The computer test needs 40 marks (OC), 35 (BC) or 30 (SC, ST, PBD) out of 100.[1]

What the Assistant Director post is

Assistant Director is a post in the A.P. Economics and Statistical Service. The notification does not list the duties, but Papers 2 and 3 show what APPSC expects you to know: economics, public finance, accounting, spreadsheets, sampling, averages, dispersion, correlation, time series and index numbers.

APPSC runs the recruitment. The posts are split between two multi-zones, and most of them go to local candidates of each one.[1]

Who it suits, and who may struggle

  • It suits a postgraduate in statistics, mathematics, economics, econometrics or computer science who wants a state government post with data work. The age limit of 44 leaves room for people who finished their PG years ago.
  • The list of PG subjects is closed. An MBA or an M.Com is not on it, and an equivalent degree needs a government order sent to APPSC within 10 days of the last date.
  • Paper 2 mixes economics with financial accounting and computer basics, and Paper 3 is pure statistics. An economics postgraduate has to build up the statistics; a mathematics or statistics postgraduate has to learn the economics and accounting.
  • With only 17 seats, SC Group-III, all BC groups except BC-A, and EWS have none. Check your row in the seats table before you put months into preparation.

How the selection works

Everyone sits all three papers of the computer-based test; missing one ends your candidature. Merit is the total of the three papers, out of 450, after normalisation if the test runs in several sessions. Candidates shortlisted from that merit list then take a 60-minute practical Computer Proficiency Test on office software, which you only need to pass.

There is no interview. Appointment depends on certificate verification and a medical fitness check. Equal marks are broken by age, the older candidate first.[1]

Syllabus outline

Paper 1, General Studies and Mental Ability: current events, general science, history of India with a focus on Andhra Pradesh, geography, polity and governance, the Indian economy and planning, sustainable development, disaster management, logical reasoning and basic data analysis.

Paper 2, in five units: economic concepts (demand, markets, national income, money and banking, inflation, public finance); international economics (trade, balance of payments, exchange rates, the IMF and World Bank); the Indian economy (population, poverty, unemployment, planning and NITI Aayog); financial accounting (journal and ledger to final accounts, bank reconciliation, depreciation); and basics of computers (number systems, algorithms and flow charts, spreadsheets).

Paper 3, in five units: collecting and presenting data (sampling, census, schedules, frequency distributions); measures of central tendency; dispersion, skewness and kurtosis; correlation (Karl Pearson and Spearman); and time series and index numbers.[1]

Tips and tricks

  • Check your OTPR before you pay. The details used for the fee and age relaxation come from it and can't be changed in the correction window.[1]
  • Keep your Class 1 to 7 study certificates ready. Local status decides 15 of the 17 seats.[1]
  • Start with the unit your PG never covered: accounting and spreadsheets for statisticians, Paper 3 statistics for economists.[1]
  • A PG earned through an open university or distance mode counts only if the Distance Education Council recognised it.[1]
  • Practise office software early. The computer test comes after the written result and has its own pass mark.[1]
