TOEFL iBT from India: fee, new 1-6 score, format and score reports
I want to take TOEFL iBT from India. What does it cost, how does the new 1 to 6 score work, how long is the test, and how do my scores reach universities?
TOEFL iBT is ETS's English test, accepted by universities in the US and many other countries. From India the registration fee is US$164 before taxes, and you can sit it at a test centre or at home with a live online proctor. The test changed in January 2026: it is now adaptive, takes about two hours, and reports each section and the overall result on a 1 to 6 scale. For two years ETS also prints a comparable 0 to 120 score, which helps because many university pages still quote the old scale. The fee includes up to four score reports if you name the universities before test day.
This page may be out of date. It was due for a re-check on 30 November 2026. Confirm every rule with the official source before acting on it.
As of 31 October 2026: ETS lists the TOEFL iBT registration fee in India as US$164 before taxes. Since January 2026 the test is shorter and adaptive, scored 1 to 6, with a comparable 0 to 120 score printed for two years. Check ets.org before you register.

Each of the four sections gets a score from 1 to 6. The overall score is their average, rounded to the nearest half band: ETS's own example is an average of 5.125, which becomes an overall 5. For a two-year transition after January 2026, the report also shows a comparable overall score on the old 0 to 120 scale.
So when a university you like still lists a 0 to 120 minimum, compare it with the 0 to 120 line on your report. When it lists a 1 to 6 band, compare it with the new score. If its page shows neither, write to admissions and ask which they want.[2]
ETS offers the same TOEFL iBT two ways: on a computer at an authorised test centre, or as the Home Edition on your own computer, watched by a live human proctor. The fee page lists one registration fee for India.[2]
The fee covers up to four official score reports to recipients you choose before the test; you can add or remove them in your ETS account until 10 p.m. (local test centre time) on the day before. After that, each extra report is paid. Universities that use ETS Data Manager get scores in about 4 to 8 business days, and postal reports to places outside the US can take 4 to 6 weeks of mail time on top.[4]
Tips and tricks
- Use all four free score reports before test day. Each one you add later is a paid extra per institution.[4]
- Register at least 8 days ahead. Inside 7 days of the test date ETS adds a US$49 express registration charge.[1]
- Download the PDF score report once it appears and keep it with your application papers; ETS reminds you scores are valid for 2 years.[3]
- Ask each university whether it takes ETS Data Manager delivery. Postal reports from India can take weeks longer, which matters near a deadline.[4]
