What the exam leads to

SSC holds this open competitive exam to recruit translators for Group B non-gazetted posts in central government ministries, departments and organisations. The work is translation between Hindi and English, and Paper-II tests that skill directly.

The junior posts (codes A to C) sit at pay Level 6 and the senior posts (code D) at Level 7. SSC put the 2026 vacancies at 84 and said post-wise and category-wise figures would follow on its Tentative Vacancy page. It does not collect vacancies by state or zone.[1]

Who can apply

The degree rule has five versions, and all of them need both languages. You can hold a master's in Hindi with English at degree level, a master's in English with Hindi at degree level, or a master's in another subject with Hindi and English at degree level, either as subjects or as the medium of examination. You must hold it on 1 August 2026.

On top of the degree you need a recognised diploma or certificate course in translation from Hindi to English and back, or translation work experience in a central or state government office, including a Government of India undertaking: 2 years for the junior posts, 3 years for the senior posts.

Age is counted on 1 August 2026: 18 to 30, so you must be born between 2 August 1996 and 1 August 2008. The upper limit is relaxed by 5 years for SC/ST, 3 for OBC, 10 for PwBD, 13 for PwBD (OBC) and 15 for PwBD (SC/ST). Ex-servicemen get 3 years after deducting their military service.[1]

How selection works

Paper-I is a computer test in two parts, General Hindi and General English, at degree level. It checks your grasp of each language and its literature, correct use of words, phrases and idioms, and your writing. Each wrong answer costs a quarter mark, and SSC normalises the scores if the test runs in several shifts.

SSC shortlists candidates category-wise on Paper-I marks for Paper-II, a written paper with one passage to translate from Hindi to English, one from English to Hindi, and an essay in each language.

In Paper-II you sign and put your left-hand thumb impression in the answer book. A book without the roll number, signature and thumb impression gets zero, and so does one where you write your name or any other personal detail inside.[1]

Tips and tricks

  • Check the degree rule before you prepare: your master's must cover both Hindi and English at degree level, as subjects or as the medium.[1]
  • Get a translation diploma or certificate if you have no government translation experience; the degree alone does not make you eligible.[1]
  • Practise timed translation in both directions. Paper-II gives you 2 hours for two passages and two essays.[1]
  • Leave a Paper-I question blank if you are guessing blindly. Each wrong answer costs a quarter mark.[1]
